The Deputy Speaker Of The House Of The People, is the second highest ranking official in the Jesstopian House Of The People. The office was established in 1806, and the office has been occupied since. The current Deputy Speaker of the House is currently Nolan Burmaster.
History[]
The office of the Deputy House Speaker was created out of concerns that if something were to happen to the House Speaker, their would not need to be a government shutdown and that the Deputy could easily take over and continue legislating before an election could determine the next Speaker. It was then decided that the Deputy Speaker would be the immediate successor to the Speakership if something was to happen to the incumbent Speaker.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities[]
The duties, roles and responsibilities of the Deputy House Speaker can vary day to day, but the most important and steadiest role of the office is to preside of house proceedings when the Speaker is not in the House during important votes. Similar to the president pro tempore of the Senate. From 1806 to 1832, the Deputy House Speaker was responsible for rallying support behind bills and ensuring a sitting vote was conducted. From 1834-2010, the Deputy speaker was placed in charge of impeachment proceedings of House members before that role was given to the House Speaker. The Deputy is now solely responsible for record keeping, ensuring decorum in the House and presiding of House proceedings while the Speaker is out of the House.
