RUFUS - Congress is set to resume and start the 84th Congress. Events include opening statements from both House and Senate leadership, as well as several Senators and Representatives, who are facing elections during the 2025 Congressional elections.
Congress, which will start its 84th Session, will kick off with outgoing House Speaker Gretchen LeWolf conducting her final opening of Congress, before she steps down as House Speaker on January 5, 2025. Further, the Senate Judiciary Committee is set to begin preparing for its hearing on LeWolf's money laundering accusations, and the charges she is set to face in a federal court later next month.
However, other important issues will be raised in both the House and Senate when they resume legislating on January 1, 2025, after Congress recessed on December 15. Issues including border security spending, veteran housing funding, as well as several other bills that were put on the back burner under House Speaker Gretchen LeWolf.
"There is a lot of work we will have to do when we get back to work tomorrow," said Matthew Carrington, the incoming-Speaker Pro Tempore. "We need to work on setting major bill proposals to a floor vote, something that we failed to do as the House in the 83rd Congress. We will work quicker and harder to get more legislation and funding packages signed in this Congress. We must put partisan politics aside for the sake of our beautiful country."
With 2025 just a day away, Congress is gripping with a power change, as Speaker LeWolf prepares to step down on the January 5, and Deputy Speaker Carrington taking on the role as Speaker Pro Tempore. It also will be the year that Congressional seats are contested and the potential for a major power shift in the Senate and House.
Congress will convene for the opening for the 84th Congress at 10:00 AM, with session activity beginning at noon. Speaker LeWolf will layout the agenda for January 1-5's session agenda.
